about heARTful art studio

heARTful was created to bring structured, studio-style art education into school communities, making meaningful creative time accessible and convenient for young artists and their families.

Classes are held weekly within the school setting, allowing young artists to participate in a dedicated creative session without the need for additional travel. Enrolment secures a place for the full school term, with each lesson running for just under one hour.

To ensure a smooth transition between groups, prompt pick-up is appreciated. For safety and insurance reasons, siblings are unable to wait outside the classroom unsupervised, and all artists are to be collected directly from the designated classroom.

Young artists from other schools and alternative education settings are warmly welcome to join.

founded by an experienced art educator

heARTful was established by a qualified Visual Art teacher, Kerry Hokianga, with over 20 years of classroom experience across primary, secondary and special education settings in Aotearoa and Australia.

The studio vibe combines structured drawing guidance with the flexibility and warmth of an after-school creative space. Through structured instruction and thoughtful, independent engagement, young artists develop strong foundations and the confidence to express their own ideas and personal style.

Artists are expected to bring their own materials to each session. An A4 visual diary is essential, along with 2B and 4B pencils. A kneadable eraser is recommended, as well as colouring materials such as markers or coloured pencils.

At its heart, heARTful is about nurturing confident, capable young artists who value the process as much as the final outcome.
